The Psammead’s Song

with 11 comments

From the closing credits of ‘Five Children and It’ and ‘The Return of the Psammead’ – BBC TV. The song is called ‘Wishing’  … I did the vocals.

The Psammead from 'Five Children and It'

When you want your heart’s desire
And there’s nothing but the fire
Of a madly yearning wild imagination;

When all you have to do is choose,
And if you don’t you’re bound to lose,
Something special in your life will pass you by;

Cyril (Simon Godwin) with The Psammead (Francis Wright)

The BBC's DVD of the Series

Castles in the air
Or a chest of purest gold,
Cast aside despair,
Start a quest –
Before you’re old …

Try wishing
A little harder every day,
To chase the clouds away!
In the twinkling of an eye,
You’ll grow tall –
Or even fly –
You won’t know until you try,
So do
And in the magic that you find
Dream your dream away …

‘Wishing’ – words and music by Michael Omer.

    • Hello! I think the dvd has disappeared from the current BBC catalogue, but it could just as easily be back again at any time. The original book by E.Nesbit is easily obtained from Amazon or any decent bookshop – go for the editions that include the original illustrations by H.R.Millar.

  4. I adore this song, and it’s stayed in my mind as a treasured memory for all these years. I wanted to include it in a post, and so I found you along the way. Very glad to ‘meet’ you 🙂 Blessings, Harula xxx

  5. I am 33 now and sing this at bedtime for my two year old – the tune and 95% of the words have stuck with me all these years and I hope one day to be able to find a box set to share with my children – just beautiful
